South Korea will have the world’s first floating city

With fears of global sea level rise gaining momentum, the idea of building climate-resilient cities on water is gaining popularity. UN-Habitat, Bjarke Ingels Group, SAMOO (Samsung Group), Oceanix and other companies have joined forces to build the first floating city in South Korea.

The plan was unveiled back in 2019, but has only evolved since then. The project was named Oceanix Busan because of its planned location off the coast of South Korea’s Busan. It will be three huge floating platforms connected to the mainland that will house residential buildings, public spaces with restaurants and science areas. However, the project could be expanded to 20 islands with a much larger capacity.
